I really enjoyed this Helen, thanks. I’m quite new to visiting stones but find it deeply fascinating. Last year I visited Arbor Low stone circle in Derbyshire which is open. It was quiet and there were a couple of other visitors. One of them was clearly moved and spent a lot of time hugging the stones.
I’ll add these to my list. I also enjoyed the Dr Who connection. Tom Baker was my favourite.
Your trip to Arbor Low sounds wonderful! I'm new to them as well because I'm from East Anglia, and we just don't have them there. And they're not very accessible by public transport either, but now we've got the car, we can get to them.
Really need to get up to the Peaks to see more!
I didn't know about the Doctor Who connection until we'd been the first time and I'd put my pics on Facebook. A friend who's a huge Doctor Who fan got very excited that we'd been there! Tom Baker's fab! I met Jon Pertwee when I was little because he was the special guest at a local carnival and turned up as Wurzel Gummidge. I adored that programme! So one of my earliest memories is of sitting on my dad's shoulders as he chased Wurzel Gummidge across a village green!
Thank you for the interesting read! If we make our way across the Atlantic in the coming years, we'll have to add this spot to our list of places to visit.
You really should! It's not too far from London (assuming you'd be arriving there), and actually might be the closest set of standing stones to the capital (which partly explains why it was a film set!).
I also really enjoyed this 🙂 I was right there following your footsteps. Also reminded me of Hook Norton beer that I used to drink! And congrats on the new book release too! 🥳🥳🥳
Oh, thank you! And yes, Hook Norton beer - we did go there so I could peer at some very weathered headstones in the Baptist's chapel yard (something for another newsletter, maybe!) but I didn't get round to drinking the beer! 🍻
Brilliant. I need to get over there again. Two hours or so from me. First went as a boy. Probably make a video and do some UFO (plasmoid) summoning. See what happens. As to the Doctor, would have been good had it been in a Christopher Eccleston episode - more hardcore! I've got this idea (speculative) that standing stones had encoded language in them - like qubits... quantum rather than binary. Stone (solid state) hard-drives! Haha.
Well, this is a post right up my street, a wanderer of ancient landscapes. I didn't know about these stones, but now they're on my list of places to visit. Thank you for this 🙏

You're not too far away, then! You should definitely go back.
Ahh yes good old Eccleston with his leather jacket-wearing doctor!
My partner took dowsing rods with him and they were reacting to the stones, which is intriguing....

It's one of those historical places which seems to have magic in it. It's definitely worth a trip!
The Whispering Knights are quite magical - something that Penelope Lively captured so well in her children’s novel of the same name.
Wow, I hadn't heard of that book before! It makes for a brilliant title, and I'm intrigued!
